Season:
November till April

Description
The excursion begins or ends, depending on pre-arranged plans, with a visit to the well-known vegetable and handicraft market (Feria Pinto) in Temuco. During the drive to the hotel we will stop to view two beautiful waterfalls. Having arrived at the La Suizandina you will be treated to a welcome drink and a smile.

The following day will be spent climbing, with a mountain guide, the 2940m high Lonquimay volcano. The climb itself is relatively easy; however, a certain amount of energy must nevertheless be invested in the 1300m difference in altitude. Having reached the top you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. Later, you can enjoy a well-deserved rest in the Malalcahuello thermal baths.

On the 3rd day a Huaso (Chilean cowboy) will brief us on the most important aspects of riding. He will then lead us, on Criollo horses, to turquoise coloured lagoons, past the Sierra Nevada Glacier and to other impressive vantage points.

On the 4th day we will trade in our horses for mountain bikes. The ride up though the forest is enjoyable. At the top there are only a few hardy lone araucaria trees and the dominant Lonquimay volcano to be seen. Then comes the highlight, probably the coolest descent in the southern hemisphere, an 800m single trail ride down to the town of Malalcahuello.

The next day, our climb up the 3200meter high Llaima volcano begins in the Conguillio National Park. Within the next 5-6 hours a local guide will lead us to the smoking crater. The Llaima is one of the Earth’s most active volcanoes and the panoramic view from the summit is unforgettable.

After an overnight stay close to the Conguillio National Park, we will have plenty of time to explore the park by foot or on horseback. The Conguillio National Park is reputably one of the most beautiful parks in Chile. Here, it feels as though one is transported back in time. The park’s natural surroundings: the emerald green lagoons, 1000 year old trees and the snow capped volcano, Llaima, are truly breathtaking.

The 2554m Sierra Nevada is the only mountain with true alpine character in the region. A huge glacier covers the south-eastern side of the mountain and incidentally gave the mountain its name. The varying southern beech and araucaria forests and the flora during the ascent provide a welcome change. In addition, condors are often spotted soaring above. Although the final ascent is strenuous the spectacular view from the summit makes it is well worthwhile.

The final tour is climbing the 3200m high Llaima volcano in the Conguillio National Park. Initially we can enjoy our beautiful surroundings; however, the volcano later tilts up to 45° and thus demands our total concentration. Luckily, an experienced mountain guide expertly leads us up the smoking crater within 5-6 hours. The Llaima is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Once having reached the summit, we are rewarded with an unforgettable panoramic view. If desired, it is possible to stay at La Suizandina for an additional night.
